Roadside Planter

This week's view of My World shows a roadside planter at the side of Ashton's newest road, Albion Way.

Albion Way opened a few months ago and bypasses the Market area, making life easier for shoppers to get to bus stops and to Penny Meadow. To brighten the road up, the council has placed a number of metal flower boxes alongside. These are painted in the town's colours of dark blue and silver (like this website) and bear the town's name and coat of arms.

I can't show you the Google Street View of this, as Mr Google hasn't driven past here since the road opened.

Stamford Park Flower Beds

For this week's My World feature we pay another visit to the splendid flower beds in Stamford Park, on the border of Ashton and Stalybridge.

The colours have completely changed since I posted the photo of primroses in these beds in May. This photo was taken on Sunday during a history walk around the park as part of the Heritage weekend. I was amazed at how much colour these still is in the park half-way through September!

Yellow

"Y" is for "Yellow" and there is certainly plenty of yellow to be seen in today's photo.

Primroses

My World at the moment is filled with lovely flowers, like this marvellous bed of primroses in Stamford Park, on the border of Ashton and Stalybridge.

It's a shame I couldn't get to the park on Sunday to see the Tulip Sunday display, but, as you can see, the usual formal flower beds were glorious in the park a few days before the tulip event.

You know that Summer is not far away when the daffodils come out!

Each year there is a host of golden daffodils in the triangular gardens between Mossley Road, Penny Meadow and Cricket's Lane, just east of Ashton town centre.

It draws me each year at this time! I will probably post another photo of this spot in a few days. Here is last year's photo.

Floral Lamp Posts

After the rainy shots of Ashton in the last few weeks, a return to the usual sunshine this week!

Tameside Council, as it does every year, makes a good job of brightening the town up with colourful displays of flowers. These florally-enhanced lamp posts are on Ashton's Town Hall steps and this photo, taken on Monday, is looking towards the Market Hall.

Box of Delights

What a pleasing sight! Just three miles to the west of Ashton town centre is this Victorian pillar box situated on the edge of the Fairfield Moravian Settlement in Droylsden.

I'll show photos of Fairfield settlement itself later on, but I thought you would like to see the colourful blooms surrounding this attractive post box before they wilt!

Mossley in Bloom

Mossley also benfits from the Tameside in Bloom programme. This floral display, depicting one of Mossley's mills, is alongside Stockport Road, near the Butcher's Arms in Top Mossley.

Ashton in Bloom

If drivers hurrying along the Ashton bypass happen to glance towards St Michael's Parish Church, they will be rewarded with a glimpse of this floral display, depicting Ashton Market Hall. This is part of the annual Tameside in Bloom effort to make the borough a cheerier place.

No cats to be seen!

Another view of the display of spring flowers seen in the small gardens at the top of Penny Meadow, known to some as the Cats' Park. (I was hoping someone would tell me why!)
The road layout is confusing here. The bottom part of Mossley Road, running down to the by-pass, is behind the camera. The houses on the right are on the top part of Crickets Lane. To the left is the top part of Penny Meadow, with the terraced houses of Caroline Street running off at an angle.

Parish Church

The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels seen across the ornamental entrance to the Memorial Gardens in Ashton.
The area between the gardens and the church was the historic heart of Ashton, with the the Old Cross standing in the original market place.

Memorial Gardens

Ashton's Memorial Gardens in bloom in the April sunshine. At the top of the bank stands the war memorial. In the background is a block of new apartments and behind that the tower of Albion Sunday school (seen in yesterday's photo) can also be seen.

The Cats' Park

Spring is very definitely in the air in Ashton this week. The trees may still be bare but there is plenty of colour on the ground!

This is the view across the triangular-shaped gardens between Mossley Road, Penny Meadow and Cricket's Lane. In the distance is Albion Warehouse, the former Albion Sunday School.

The Daffs Are Out!

A host of golden daffodils just off Stockport Road in Mossley this week. And so soon after the recent wintry weather! Nice to see colour coming back.
