Wet and Windy

This week's view of My World shows a damp view of Ashton Market.

Wet and windy weather, such as we have had today, is not good news for the stallholders on the outside market as many of the shoppers hurry quickly between the Arcades shopping centre and the Market Hall. Ans who can blame them?

In the background is the same fruit and veg stall seen here last week.

ABC Wednesday: Rain

Today's post for ABC Wednesday is R for "Rain". Of course, being close to Manchester, rain is not something that we see very often, as you can tell from all the sunny scenes eleswhere on this blog!

However, it does occasionally precipitate in the town and, like many other towns, it can look a little miserable when the weather is bad.

The photo shows part of the Market Place in Ashton, with the Market Hall on the left and the Open Market to the right. Open markets are not the best places to be during downpours but there are still some hardy souls carrying on regardless. It is on days like this when you really appreciate the town having a splendid indoor market where you can forget the weather!

Wet Day

It may come as a surprise to some of the regular visitors to this blog, but it does sometimes rain in Ashton.

Of course, I am more likely to go out to photograph something on a dry or even sunny day and I don't like to get my camera wet, so you do not often get to see photos here taken on wet days!

This particular rainy day image shows a corner of Ashton Market where some of the fruit and veg stalls are, with the Market Hall on the left and Market Avenue disappearing into the distance.

A Bit Wet

Today My World was A Bit Wet. Today's photo shows Market Street in Ashton in the rain.

Some cynical people might say that, since it is near Manchester, it must be a bit wet most of the time! However, today's rain has made a welcome change after weeks of warm and dry weather. It may not be nice getting soaked on the way back from the shops but the rain is needed - April was one of the driest Aprils on record!

Rain, Rain

"Rain, rain, go away!" was the general sentiment in Ashton over the past few days, as "My World" became Waterworld and it seemed as if it would never stop raining.

The Manchester area has a reputation for having a lot of rain but it is not as wet as is often supposed, as can be seen from the majority of photos on this blog!

In fact Manchester is the 9th wettest city in Britain. Swansea (not far from the location of the recent Ryder Cup golf tournament) is the wettest with an average of 53 inches of rain each year. This compares with 31.5 inches for Manchester. Mind you, I suppose Manchester would seem wet when compared with Cambridge, which only gets around 22 inches of rain each year.

And if you thought Swansea is wet, more than twice as much rain falls in some parts of the Scottish Highlands, with up to 118 inches of rain annually.

That was little consolation in rain-soaked Ashton in the last few days, though! Incidentally, the photo shows a damp Warrington Street, looking towards Old Street from near the Old Post Office.

Sky Watch: Waterlogged

This week's Sky Watch has a little more sky than normal - it includes a reflection in a giant puddle that appeared on Richmond Street Playing Fields, on the western edge of Ashton, following heavy rain earlier this week.

Let's hope that the crowds flocking here this evening to see the organised firework display are careful where they walk in the dark!

The fireworks start at 8.00 pm. Park at CineWorld if arriving by car. If it rains much more this week they may have to change the musical track from Handel's Fireworks Music to Handel's Water Music!

Damp Day in Ashton

A view of Ashton's Market Hall after a short downpour of rain. The dampness on the ground is now sparkling after the sun emerges between the clouds.

Some people have commented that all the photos on the blog seem to show sunny days. Well, of course, the sunshine is normal for Sunny Ashton and the rainy days are few and far apart, oh yes....

By the way... Sorry for the lack of pictures since Thursday but I have had a bit of a computer disaster, Luckily it was all backed up apart from the last few days, but I can't get to all the lovely autumn photos I took last week. I am hoping to be able to retrieve them from the hard drive soon but I might have to go out and take some more...

Rainy Days

Another damp day - this time looking across Ashton Market from the Market Hall.

The composition would have looked better if the two ladies had been further to the left, silhouetted against the lighter patch of ground. However by the time I had pressed the button they had moved further across. I didn't feel that they would appreciate me asking them to go back and walk past me again!

Mossley on Monday: Puddle

The recent rainy period couldn't be allowed to pass without more damp photos appearing here!

Today's image looks along Argyle Street in Mossley after a heavy downpour.

Mossley police station is seen on the right and the Pennine moors above Carrbrook are seen in the background.

Rainy Days

Some followers of this blog have commented that the photos mostly seem to show Ashton in the sunshine. This is probably true as I do tend to go out taking photos when it is a nice day and don't usually think about taking photos on a wet, miserable day.

Today's photo is for those of you in hot faraway countries, especially ex-pat Ashtonians who miss the Lancashire rain! The scene is looking northwards along Warrington Street, from the junction with Old Street, towards the Market Ground.

The photo was taken this morning. Typically, the weather this afternoon returned to the normal glorious sunshine!
