"A" is for "Alley Way" and today's photo shows the a back alley typical of those that run behind the streets of terraced houses in Ashton.
At one time many of these "backs" would have had an earth surface, getting muddy in wet weather. The posher streets might have cobbled back alleys!
Nowadays many of the alleys have concrete flagged surfaces and are enclosed within lockable gates to keep out unwelcome visitors.
The back alleys were needed to provide rear access to the houses which were built in continuous terraces.

The Alley ways of Ashton are a perfect way to begin ABC Wednesday. They actually look quite lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove the shadow in the Alley - makes me want to write about it...lovely..bkm
ReplyDeleteAlleys are quite handy. I like the idea of the lockable gates.
ReplyDeleteI have always associated this kind of alley with Britain, an to me it is part of the charm.
ReplyDeleteMy wife's former house had an alley behind, but that's fairly rare now in Albany, NY USA.
ReplyDeleteNice.

We called our alley where I lived as a child an "Entry".
ReplyDeleteIt was always a busy place - children playing football, dustbin collection, coal delivery and the rag and bone man on his horse drawn cart.
They seem quiet places now . How times have changed.
I knew alley,s as ginnels, when a kid we used to hop from one to the other roofs of the outside toilets.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ashton for taking me back to my childhood in South Bend, Indiana. I loved the alley of our long city block and the difference between the street side and alley side of the houses.
ReplyDeleteA great photo for ABC Wednesday!

P.S. Our alley was big enough for cars and was covered in cinders.

ReplyDeleteOh boy, do I remember these! When we were first married and lived in an older part of Liverpool, I had to be escorted home through one of these on the dark winter evenings. My husband grew up with one behind his house. That was all a LONG time ago!
