Stamford Park Conservatory

Today's view of the world of Ashton under Lyne shows the "Conservatory" in Stamford Park, on the border between Ashton and Stalybridge.

This is not your average conservatory added on to the back of a house. This is the John Nield Conservatory, which is effectively a hothouse in which exotic plants grow. A sign over the entrance tells how it was "erected and furnished with plants from the legacy left to Stamford Park by the late John Nield Esq. J.P. Apsley House, Ashton under Lyne, Opened 3rd Oct 1907."

I showed you a photo looking up at the roof structure inside the conservatory three years ago.

  3. How nice that you have a conservatory so close to where you live. I find them extremely enjoyable by the end of February or early March when I need jolt of bright colours and plant growth.

  5. A very interesting post. At the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro there is a greenhouse where orchids are grown.
    Have a great week.

  6. What a wonderful place that must be. And 1907, so casually mentioned, makes it almost new by English standards. In western Canada, that would be considered very old!

  8. Now that is the size conservatory I could use here. A lovely structure, so well fitted for the location.

  9. I'd like one attached to my house right now, we've discovered rising damp! I think my orchid would appreciate it too, we don't have anything like that around here.

  10. I remember visiting the 'glasshouse' in Stamford Park when I was a child. I thought it was very exotic at the time. Lovely place on a cold winter's day!

  16. I was born in Ashton in 1938 and spent many happy hours with frids in Stanny park in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
My eldest brother SId worked as a gardener in the hot houses and generally around the park in the early 1950s.it was a fantastic place even then and I believe that it still is.
