ABC Wednesday: Yellow and Blue

Today's post for ABC Wednesday is Y for "Yellow and Blue" and I wonder whether you can spot anything yellow and blue in the photo?

The picture shows the construction of the new Metrolink tram terminus alongside Wellington Road in Ashton, looking back towards Oldham Road.

When the tram is running, it is a good bet that visitors arriving on the tram will notice that they come into the town past a rather large yellow and blue building. This is, of course, IKEA. I expect there's one near where you live. This particular IKEA, the Manchester branch, is a bit controversial because, unlike most branches, it is situated close to the the town centre.

This is good for those people who don't have cars but some people feel the building dominates that side of the town too much. However, that doesn't stop people shopping there and it seems to be very popular with shoppers from Ashton and from all around Manchester.

Whenever I have been in, I become baffled by all the odd names things have. I'm sure there was a table called Nigel.

See Google Street View of this location.

  1. I thought ye y in eyekea stood for yuk or should that be yuck?

  2. Why do people keep slagging Ikea off, I've got a house full of their furniture that has lasted for years, better than the rubbish sold in other furniture stores that fall apart after a week. The place is always full of shoppers whenever I go in and they are buying plenty. Delivery is good too, bought a bed and within 5 minutes of getting home the delivery van was pulling up outside my house. Yes the building dominates, but what an asset to the town, it's provided plenty of much needed work for locals, Stockport is sorry it let that one go.

  3. I have never been to Ikea!

  4. I have other IKEA stuffs and they are pretty good !!

  5. We don't have an IKEA here but saw one in Denver last week on vacation. My friends have quite a few items from them.

  6. IKEA is a good store but pricey!

  7. I've only been there once, but my main complaint is the length of time it takes to get out of the place. You don't seem to be able to take a short cut, but have to follow the designated route so you go past all the displays till you're eventually allowed out. I don't know how they'd cope if they had to evacuate the place quickly.

  8. The short cuts in the main display area are clearly marked but if you want to miss it out completely go through the cafe straight to the market place, then its a more straight forward route to the escalators and lifts. Its easy when you know how.
