Market Avenue

A few days ago I mentioned "The Avenue" as being Ashton's original traffic-free zone. So today's photo shows a damp January view of this thoroughfare, properly called "Market Avenue" but commonly known as "The Avenue".

  1. Not many shoppers about. I suppose you can't blame them for staying inside and buying on line in such damp weather.

  2. There were a lot more shoppers around the other end of the Avenue. I'll post some photos of that end later on.

  3. Thanks again for the memories. I was trying to think about a particular shop I loved in Ashton. It was a grocers which sold coffee beans which they ground themselves. The smell in the street was wonderful! Was it on the Avenue?

  6. Thanks to you both for that! I've always been more of a tea drinker but that coffee smell was just amazing (esp on a wet Saturday!)

  7. There is a memory in every inch of the pictures you have posted of the Market Avenue. I too can smell the coffee beans, but the name of the shop eludes me Ahhhhhhh! I remember Morris's Shoe Shop, Prices Cake Shop, What appears to be a florist shop in the pictures I am quite sure was The Blue Chicken when I left years ago. Grafton House - Ladies Blouses and Boots Chemist. Burgess 7 Dyson's the Book and Stationery Stores. Thanks for the memories.
P.S. Was the coffee shop called Walkers?

  8. Oh! The lovely smell of that coffee shop still brings to mind The Avenue even after 70 years! And also Boots, and I'm sure there used to be a shop where we would stick our noses on the window at Christmas to see the loads and loads of lovely toys displayed.
