Henry Square (yet again)

A different view of Henry Square (previously seen here in January). This is looking across Stamford Street towards the Magistrates' Court. The old swimming baths are off the photo to the left.

Taunton Sunday School

Taunton Sunday School on Newmarket Road. It dates from 1820 and was built by public subscription, being independent of any of the churches. The former hamlet of Taunton lies between Waterloo and Daisy Nook.

The Heys

Looking down Mossley Road towards Ashton at the junction with Herries Street.
New houses stand on the site of the old Heys Primary School (originally Mossley Road School) which in turn was partly on the site of the Heys Colliery.

Triangles

The unusual Victorian architecture of these buildings on Henrietta Street results in triangular and pentagonal panes of glass in the windows!

Last of the Snow Pics

The last of this series of photos showing Easter Sunday's snow was taken from the same spot as yesterday's but looking in a different direction. In this photo we are looking south along Luzley Lane in the direction of the Hare and Hounds pub, which is out of sight about half a mile further on. Luzley Lane runs along the ridge between Ashton and Mossley.

Hartshead Pike

Easter weather on the hills above Ashton. Hartshead Pike is seen here from Luzley Lane, with Mossley Road running across the picture.

Ashton under Snow

An extra photo today! The Memorial Gardens, War Memorial and St Michael's Parish Church, Ashton.

It looks a bit like a scene from a Christmas card, but this was Ashton today, on Easter Sunday morning!

A heavy fall of snow during the night left a white blanket over everything. The sun was soon out, however, and the snow began to melt. The snow remained on the hills right through the day, though, as you will see in tomorrow's photo.

Warrington Street

The Lion with the Key is above the entrance to the NatWest Bank on the corner of Warrington Street and Old Street.
Congrats to Greeny for getting it right!
High up on the building, above the lion, is the Ashton coat of arms and the motto "Labor Omnia Vincit".
The site was originally (from around 1750 to 1901) the site of the George and Dragon pub, which was re-located to Bow Street.

The Lion holds the key to the location of this building in a prominent position in central Ashton.

Curzon Road

Looking across Curzon Road, Hurst, from the corner of Cedar Street. Opposite is Alfred Street leading to Diamond Street and Bengal Square.

Hurst Co-op

The new Co-op supermarket on Queens Road near Hurst Cross. The supermarket stands on the site of the Roxy Cinema. There is also a Co-op "Late Shop" around the corner on Kings Road .

Roxy Shops

The row of shops on Queens's Road, Hurst Cross, Ashton. At one time these shops faced the "Cake-a-Pie" factory and the Roxy Cinema, both now gone.

Bakery Court

These modern houses just off Queens Road are on the site of the former "Cake-a-Pie" factory in Hurst. The factory had originally been part of the massive Whittaker's cotton mills before becoming a flour mill. In later years it was owned by Rank Hovis McDougall. The housing development is appropriately named "Bakery Court".

Rounded Corners

This interesting house is on the corner of Ladbrooke Road and Broadoak Road in Ashton. The curved corners and windows give it an Art Deco feel.

The Family

The huge sculpture entitled "The Family" stands at the junction of Fletcher Street and Market Street in Ashton, facing the Market Hall. It is the work of sculptor Paul Margetts, who has a number of other works around the town. It was unveiled in 1995, after being commissioned by MAB (UK) the previous year, the "Year of the Family". Signs of the times in the background are "Superpound Store" on the left and "Dizzi Gothic" on the right.

Courtyard

Something a bit different - a terrace of three stone houses facing onto a courtyard off Mill Street, Bottom Mossley. The pointing is very neat, even if it is the raised "strap pointing" that some experts don't approve of!

Downing Street

Downing Street, off Newmarket Road, Ashton. There is no policeman standing outside Number 10.

Before the 1765 turnpike road opened, this was the main road between Ashton and Oldham!

Garden Terrace

These terraced houses on Newmarket Road would have been regarded as two steps up from the houses shown yesterday:
1) they have small front forecourts/gardens
2) the front rooms have bay windows
Notice also the simple decorative brickwork above the bay window and below the roof guttering.

Terrace

These traditional brick-built terraced houses on Kings Road, Hurst Knoll, are typical of many thousands of houses built in Ashton in the late Victorian period. The plaque on the wall reads "Boston Terrace 1877". The houses are now very much in the 21st century, with uPVC windows and doors, satellite dishes, television aerials and burglar alarms.

Mind your step!

A well-worn doorstep in Mossley. The small town of Mossley is only about 3 miles from Ashton but is a world of stone houses rather than the brick of Ashton.

Vicarage Road

Looking down Vicarage Road, Ashton under Lyne, which leads from Cranbourne Road to Wilshaw Lane. The buildings on the horizon are in Oldham.

A little touch of Winter returns

We haven't had much in the way of Winter Weather this year, but we got a quick touch yesterday. Snow overnight produced a very thin coating on the hills around Greenfield. It had all melted away an hour or so after this photo was taken!
The photo is looking across the Royal George Mills, Friezland (now housing) towards Greenfield and Chew Valley. Dovestones Reservoir is just visible in the V of the hills (above right of centre). The Huddersfield Narrow Canal can be seen behind the line of trees to the right in the foreground. The War Memorial at Pots and Pans is visible on the skyline on the extreme left. Prospect Place (2)

Another view of Prospect Place, Hurst, which still enjoys a pleasant prospect across Cedar Park towards the distant Pennine Hills.

Prospect Place

Prospect Place, Hurst, and Swift Street, which runs across the end, are two of the "dirt roads" that can still be found in Ashton. These are streets that have not been "adopted" by the local council and so no road surface has been provided.
Sometimes residents are happy for things to stay this way, as it discourages cars from taking short cuts through, but I imagine it can lead to muddy footprints on the carpet when there has been a lot of rain!

The Writing's On the Wall

No wonderful street art for my contribution to the Daily Photo Blog Graffiti Theme Day, I'm afraid. Ashton doesn't get a lot of that. Ashton doesn't get a great deal of unartistic graffiti, either, I'm pleased to say.
So I thought I would share this message painted on the brickwork in New Lees Street: "Do not dump rubbish bags here."
There seems to be an irony in trying to prevent a temporary eyesore by creating a permanent one!
