S is for Stockport Road, which is the main A6017 road from Ashton towards Guide Bridge, Denton and, of course, Stockport.
This photo is looking along Stockport Road towards the centre of Ashton from the bus stop in Trafalgar Square. The tower of St Peter's Church is seen in the centre of the photo. The Twelve Apostles terrace is out of shot to the right.

ReplyDeleteThe shops on the left in the early 1970's held a barber shop where Gino cut my hair and under the protection of an umbrella escorted me to the photographers on the corner with Grosvenor St where my picture was taken and made into a poster size image to display in his shop!
ReplyDeleteI remember Gino's fist day at St Ann's in the 60's as a newly arrived immigrant from Italy.
I suppose you may guess the first English words we Taught him!
It's sometimes astonishing some of the memories we are able to recall.
Cambridge st not Grosvenor St
ReplyDeleteOh dear! Another alien landscape to me.
ReplyDeleteThe speed limit on this road is 20 miles an hour because there is a school just off it. The spped camera is a long way from the school so everyone creeps past that at the correct speed and then ignores the limit as they go past the school!
ReplyDeleteIt Is NOT a speed camera. It is a traffic camera which measures traffic flow. Also, the official limit is actually 30mph on paper, 20mph painted.
