This night-time view shows the seats below the Victorian-style shelter on Wellington Road in the centre of Ashton. On the left, behind the red Royal Mail pillar box is the side of Ashton Town Hall.
The building on the right was originally the town's Fire Station but is now an estate agent and pub.
The line of lights in the distance are on the platform of Ashton's railway station.
On the opposite side of the road a solitary passenger waits for the bus home.

ReplyDeleteGerald - I don't think this shelter was here originally. The exact spot was originally a roadway and the tramways office was just a few yards away, with shelters attached to it all the way round. See archive photo.
ReplyDeleteThe shelter is identical in style to the longer one in Hyde, which the Tameside Image Archive caption as a "Victorian Style Tram Shelter". If the shelter is a genuine Victorian one then it would seem to have been moved from somewhere else, which would have upset people.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone who knows for sure.

ReplyDeleteThe "long one" on Market Street in Hyde is very definitely a Victorian tram stop and is Grade II listed - http://hydedailyphoto.blogspot.com/2007/07/bus-shelter-on-market-street.html However the one in Market Place, Hyde is very similiar to the one in Ashton http://hydedailyphoto.blogspot.com/2007/09/covered-seat-in-market-place.html I would suggest that the benches are modern but the covers are from original tram shelters.
