Doctor Spencer's House

(Click photo for larger version. Press Back button to return here.)

"D" is for "Doctor Spencer's House" and today's photo shows this house on Henrietta Street in Ashton that was once the home of a Doctor Spencer.

Before you marvel at my wonderful knowledge of local history, I should point out that I knew this simply by looking at the stained-glass window above the door, where the words "Dr S. Spencer" appear.

This is a fairly large house so it is possible that, as well as being Doctor Spencer's residence, it might have also been where his patients came to see him. If anyone reading this knows anything of Doctor Spencer I would be pleased to hear from them.

  2. Sorry I don't know anything, but anyone with his name emblazoned over the doorway must have been important at one time in the area. Pretty home and doorway, by the way.

  3. It certainly would have been his surgery as well as his house but more than that couldn't say.

  4. I love those old homes in England. I bet he did have his patients come to the house, but I really don't know anything about this particular doctor's history.

  5. I wonder if he would have been the doctor in the early 1900s. It reminds me of the old houses of that time period. Whatever the case it made an interesting post for D Day.

  7. Such a huge house and I like that idea on putting the name on top of a door. So nobody could miss it. Happy Wednesday!

  10. In the 1901 census there is a Charles S. Spencer living at 226 Stamford St Ashton Under Lyne. He is described as a 'homapathist' (spelling as written by census enumerator) and the words 'sub med are written alongside. In the same household is a Sandy Spencer born abt 1878 in Oldham and brother of Charles. He is aged 23 and described as a medical student. Could this be Dr S Spencer???
