Crime Lake

Today's Sky Watch image is looking across Crime Lake, between Ashton and Oldham.

The weather has been rather hot lately, so the sky is rather hazy even though it was sunny. The hazy sky is reflected hazily on the surface of the lake.

In the distance can be seen the former cotton mills in Hathershaw. Apart from these distant glimpses of industry, you could imagine yourself to be miles from a town here.

Crime Lake was formed when the Hollinwood Canal was built on an embankment over a small valley, which was then allowed to fill up after a culvert collapsed. In Victorian and Edwardian times the lake was a popular destination for Sunday afternoons out.

  4. Crime Lake sounds like something out of a movie - the person in red noted on the far bank looks very suspicious - possibly scurrying away from the scene of a crime!!
Have an enjoyable and safe week-end.

  5. You've got me intrigued, who committed the crime, or is it a crime to have a lake?

  6. What an unusual name for a lake. It looks peaceful though.

  7. Was the 'Crime' the collapse of the culvert that fooded the valley? It does seem to be a strange name. Looks like a nice peaceful place for a picnic on a sunny afternoon though.

  8. Rather a grim name for a charming spot!

  9. Sorry to disappoint - the name "Crime Lake" comes from an old name for that area - "Chrime".

  11. So disappointing to know the name of this lovely lake isn't mysterious at all, but it is still very pretty. I always enjoy your photos.
