Market Place

Today's view of the world of Ashton under Lyne shows some of the stalls on Ashton Market.

Even on a Winter's day there is plenty of colour to be seen on the stalls of the open market.

In the background are the unloved council offices. Rumour has it that the council may be contemplating the idea of redeveloping the site of these offices as much of the office space is now empty.

Ashton has had a market since the year 1284!

  1. Great shot. I love open air markets and this looks like one I'd enjoy if I lived near by.

  5. There should be a competition to have the building re done so to speak. It's horrible especially at the Warrington St Wellington Rd corner. It was built at a time when there were no architects anywhere. Clueless people designed this building. Compare instead to the buildings built 50 years earlier at around the time of the Art Deco movement. There's no comparison. look at the buildings that replaced where the George and Dragon stood and opposite where the 'precinct' was built. the old Reporter building. All gone and replaced with cheap looking buildings that completely lack any architectual detail. No artistic merit whatsoever. No homage to proportion or ratio. No aesthetic properties whatsoever.
