Sunday Stroll: Quick Edge

Today's photo is a view of Quick Edge rather than a view from it. The photo is taken from Brown Edge, the highest part of the hill behind Hartshead Pike. It is looking eastwards across Quick Edge towards the mass of Alphin Pike. Brown Edge is a fairly easy walk along grassy paths from the centre of Mossley. Good views are also to be had from Quick Edge, although the walk from Mossley is up a surfaced lane.

To the left of Alphin Pike can be seen Dovestones Reservoir which is beyond Greenfield.

Brown Edge is 308 metres (1010ft) above sea level, the part of Quickedge in the photo around 280 metres (918 ft) and the summit of Alphin Pike is 469 metres (1538 ft).

It may seem surprising that such a dramatic highland view can be found from a viewpoint less than 4 miles from the centre of Ashton.

Quick Edge

"Q" is for "Quick Edge" and today's photo shows the hill of that name above Mossley, four miles from Ashton. The hill has a very steep slope on its western side although from this angle it appears as a rounded hump.

Quick Edge is seen here from Luzley Lane at Mossley Cross. St George's Parish Church, Mossley, is seen to the right.

The part of the hill that is visible in this photo is in the borough of Tameside whereas the part you can't see is in the borough of Oldham. Both were in Lancashire before becoming part of the Greater Manchester area. Yet, before the township of Mossley was established in 1885, the whole of Quick Edge was in the West Riding of Yorkshire! The area was in a part of Saddleworth called Quickmere. Quick Manor was situated in what is now known as the Roughtown area of Mossley.

Sunday Stroll: Dry Stone Wall

(Click photo for larger version. Press Back button to return here.)

On a recent Sunday stroll up over Quick Edge in Mossley, I spotted this dry stone wall which was in the process of being re-built.

As my previous picture of a dry stone wall near Hartshead Pike had attracted interest, I thought that some of you might be interested to see how these walls are constructed.

I did not venture out with my camera today as it was snowing again and the hills were covered in a layer of white once again.

I apologise for the absence of photos for the last few days and I add this photo today especially for my friend Pete, who has been staring at the photo of the escalator for days now in the hope that it would change!

Mossley on Monday: Bollards

The street furniture in Mossley, including the fence on the left, the street lights and this row of bollards, is painted in the town's corporate colours of green and gold. Each town within the Tameside Metropolitan Borough has its own corporate solour scheme - Ashton's being dark blue and silver.

This view looks from Market Street down Stamford Street, with Quick Edge rising in the background.

Sky Watch: Seasonal Weather

To start of the New Year with a truly seasonal photo, here is a view looking down across Greenfield from Quick Edge, Mossley, about 5 miles from the centre of Ashton.

The whispy whiteness of the streaky sky is almost a continuation of the whiteness of the ground! What you can't see is that was a bitterly cold wind blowing!

Sky Watch: Take the High Road

Although the snow has now thawed, there are plenty of snow images to share, and today's "Sky Watch" image shows a road that is almost in the sky itself!

This is Quickedge Road, an ancient highway that crosses Quick Edge and drops down into the town of Mossley. Although fairly isolated, this sscene is just 4 miles from the centre of Ashton.

Quickedge Road is not used as a through route so the snow ploughs didn't bother clearing the three foot drifts that filled the road between the two stone walls. The many footsteps in the snow show that this did not stop people from exploring this snowy location.

The sky looks harmless enough in this scene and it is hard to imagine that not long before the clouds had jettisoned large amounts of snow onto the landscape!

Dusting of Snow over Greenfield

The area around Ashton woke up to a light dusting of snow on Friday, which quickly started to disappear at lower levels, so I took a walk over Quick Edge, near Mossley, to survey the surrounding landscape.

This view looks eastwards, over one of the many dry stone walls in the area, across the Tame Valley towards Greenfield and the Pennine moors beyond.

The snow wasn't deep enough to hide the grass completely. In spite of the winter sunshine there was a penetrating cold wind blowing! The forecasters are suggesting that we may see some more snow over the weekend.

Quickedge Road

(Click photo for larger version. Press Back button to return here.)

"Q" is for "Quickedge Road" which is a steep road leading up out of Mossley.

Quickedge Road leads up onto Quick Edge, which has featured in a number of posts on this blog. The steep hill affords marvellous views down the Tame Valley towards Stalybridge, with the green bulk of Luzley Brow dominating the skyline beyond the houses of Top Mossley.
