Escalator

(Click photo for larger version. Press Back button to return here.)

"E" is for "Escalator" and this photograph shows one of the very few escalators to be found in Ashton. The photo was taken last year when the Ladysmith Centre was undergoing further refurbishment. This has included building new small retail units between the columns along one side of the passageway.

Older readers who have been away from Ashton may remember the Ladysmith Centre as "The Precinct" when it was the height of modernity.

There is an escalator in the adjoining Marks and Spencer store and in the Arcades shopping mall. They are all "up" escalators so you aren't supposed to want to come down to earth again.

See Birds Eye View of this location.

"Escalator" is a contribution to ABC Wednesday. For more "E" posts from around the world please follow this link.

  2. Didn't 'ye olde Precinct' also have an escalator?

I've always loved the irony that this particular escalator leads up to a sports-wear shop; for those that like to wear sports-clothes but are too lazy to actually use the stairs.

Also, isn't there or wasn't there also a lift directly opposite this escalator that only went up a single floor to the sports shop? How lazy is that!

  3. I had forgotten the fact about some escalators only going up. When I was in Uzbekistan a few years ago I found the same thing in the big department store. We kept looking for the down one. Nope only the stairs.

  4. Ah, so you can escalator up but must walk down the stairs - wonderful idea!

  5. yes we have that too in the U.S.
I guess the escalator controllers think it is easier walking down that it is walking up.

  6. Nice photo. You could also save it for the letter "O". Out of order:)

  7. Good one! We have a number of escalators here in our city, both inside and outside shops. Useful things!

On behalf of the team, thank you for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! :)

  8. Number 1 rule in retail marketing "Get e'm in and try to keep e'm in."

  9. Escalator! :P Now why didn't I think of that.. :D

Agree with above comment by Andy, this would make a good 'O - Out of Order' post indeed. ;)

We have 'up'-only escalators around here too. xP

  10. In the old Ashton precinct, there used to be an escalator, and I never saw it working, in spite of having spent the first 18 years of my life in Ashton!
