Alphabet Friday - Fletcher Street

"F" is for "Fletcher Street" which runs between the old Market Hall and the temporary Phoenix Market Hall. It is now a pedestrianised street but at one time some of Ashton's local buses terminated here.

The sculpture to the left of the photo is "The Family" mentioned here in March.

  1. Hi Martin!
A very nice photo indeed but I'm just wondering - was this taken very recently? I can't help but notice everyone is wearing what seem to be Fall or heavier jackets and clothing! Surely it's not that cold in Ashton just now in July?

  3. Back in the days of Ashton Corporation Transport I think it was the number 3 Hurst Circular and the number 14 Mossley services which departed from here. There was no bus station then of course!

  4. I can remember the shop that you can see in the left of the photo- now looks like an estate agent- and used to be "Sew and Sew's- selling dress materials.

  5. Hi Meg
If you remember Sew & Sew's do you remember the art work on the side of the building, it used to be one of the highlights of going shopping, it was Alice in Wonderland, beautifully painted the entire side of the building i was so sad to see it being rendered over, i do hope someone took some pictures of it.

  6. I remember the Alice in Wonderland Mural, it was painted along the wall that ran down from Sew & Sews shop towards the market hall.
I wonder who painted it and whether it was commissioned or was just very artistic graffiti?

  9. I remember the Alice in Wonderland mural. I also remember the opticians Garland and Blease. I used to get my glasses from Mr Blease and went to school with his daughter Katie. I believe his son John now runs the business.

  11. I REMEMBER SEW & SEWS AND UPSTAIRS THERE WAS A GALLERY WITH ARTWORK FROM A LOCAL ARTIST B.HILL I THINK HE WAS CALLED BRIAN HILL. THEY MOVED OUT AROUND THE TIME OF THE FIRE IN THE TOWN HALL. HE PAINTED OILS AND WATERCOLOYRS OF LOCAL SCENES IN AND AROUND ASHTON-U-LYNE MAINLY BUILDINGS AND PEOPLE AND LOCAL PLACES OF INTEREST. HE PAINTED THE MARKET HALL ALSO BEFORE THE FIRE AND ALSO SOLD LIMITED EDITION PRINTS. I WONDER IF HE PAINTED THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING? I WONDER WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HIM?

  12. I think the mural was painted by Dave Vaughn the pop artist and father of Sadie Frost. He was a friend of my parent in the early 60s.
