New-Look Ladysmith

The Ladysmith Centre is Ashton has had a makeover. This is shown clearly by the dramatic new look to the entrance from Warrington Street and the Market.

Above the entrance, which is between Marks and Spencer and the Arcades shopping centre, is a large digital display screen which can show advertisements, news, etc.

This is the second new look the shopping centre has had since the 1960s "precinct" was re-born as "The Ladysmith Centre".

  1. One for the pub-quizzers (and, perhaps, Ashton school history lessons) - what's the connection between the shopping centre and Liverpool F.C.'s Anfield ground?

I had to do a bit of 'googling' to find out.

  2. That's as near as makes no difference Meg.

I knew Ladysmith had Boer War connections, but wasn't too sure about Spion Kop, after which the Kop at Anfield is apparently named.

    I must get a life.........

  4. Makes me feel old as I can remember the 'old' 1960s precinct being planned. Never thought it a good idea as the result was deterioration of Stamford Street which used to be a prime shopping street.
