Stamford Arcade is a passageway running between Old Street and Stamford Street. It has recently been enhanced by attractive gates at each end. I presume these can be closed on a Friday and Saturday night to keep out revellers spilling out of nearby pubs and clubs!
The church tower that you can see framed in the gate design is not an artistic representation - it's the real tower of Ashton Parish Church!

Who remembers Stepanowski's Continental Shop in this arcade?
ReplyDeleteWent here many times a week with my mum to pick up those exotic continental foodstuffs before the became the norm. This was the late 1950's and early 1960's.
Interesting. I suppose there are entrances to homes on the street and thus it would be necessary to block it off from those who might be tipsy enough to knock on the wrong door...

Stamford Arcade is situated in the heart of the early settlement of the market town of Ashton. I remember that when the houses on the right side of the photograph were being renovated, evidence of very old foundations of previous dwellings were found in the cellars.
ReplyDeleteI had a real job imaging where this was. The church spire of St Michael's helped me locate it in my mind. The gateway looks a bit OTT for what is effectively a back alley :)
ReplyDeleteTo Ashtonian - Yes, I do remember the small delicatessen, my Mum used to shop there, as did most of the Ukrainian and Polish communities in Ashton. The many varieties of Polish salami, cream cheeses and cakes were a true feast to the eyes in those days. Always a very busy 'back alley' then!
