"B" is for "Brickwork" and there are plenty of examples of interesting brickwork around Ashton.
When these basic terraced houses were constructed on Kings Road, Hurst, a hundred years or so ago, the builder decided to distinguish them by including this banding of decorative brickwork. The photo below shows that the band runs around the tops of the doors and windows of all three houses in this terrace.
Rows of terraced houses were built in all parts of Ashton during the Victorian period to house workers for the cotton mills and other factories of the town.

I remember seeing this hoses built in the 19th century for the workers. It was considered to be very basic living. I think they are very desirable today still for the modern middle class workers. The brick work of your photo is beautiful, as we say, they don't build house like that anymore.
ReplyDeletebrickies can still do this type of decoration ,but the modern buildings go for a plain look,or even worse concrete,
ReplyDeleteI love this brickwork! In Western Canada, you don't see houses built from bricks as we use wood instead. But further East you'll see some of brick and some of stone because their climate is so much colder.

Such a shame they don't do that fancy brickwork on ordinary houses anymore. At least they don't where I live.
ReplyDeleteLovely detail on this brickwork. We don't bother with these types of 'bells and whistles' in architecture now and I think it's a shame.
