The trams are coming!

The trams are coming back towards Ashton! It was in 1938 that the traditional trams stopped running in Ashton. Now, 75 years later, the new second-generation trams are heading back to the town.

Today saw the newest tram line of Manchester's Metrolink system opening as far as Droylsden. The rest of the line from Droylsden to Ashton is expected to be open some time within the next year.

The photo shows one of the new trams leaving Droylsden and heading towards Manchester and then on to Bury.

A Metrolink leaflet giving information about the new line can be found here. (.pdf) A map of the route under construction between Droylsden and Ashton can be found here. (.pdf)

When the line is complete, the trams will run every 6 minutes between Ashton and Manchester, transforming public transport in the world of Ashton under Lyne!

  2. Cemetery Road or Clayton Hall seem to be the best places to transfer from the 216 bus on to the trams when heading into Manchester.

    1. Droylsden itself is just as good for connections, with a bus stop on either side of the road level with the tram stop. Also it had the advantage today that you could sit on board the tram out of the cold wind waiting for departure time!

  3. Droylsden will probably be best coming back, but going you have to cross the road and can miss it so my choice would be to go to where the stop is south of the road - I heard a woman yesterday ask the bus driver "are there going to be fewer buses now the tram is running?" I wasn't able to see the look on the driver's face!

  4. I wish we had trams here. I could get on one and be in Dallas in a few minutes and save fuel too!

    Great shot!
