Taunton Sunday School on Newmarket Road. It dates from 1820 and was built by public subscription, being independent of any of the churches. The former hamlet of Taunton lies between Waterloo and Daisy Nook.

ReplyDeleteI apologise for this "mass comment" but I could you with your help today over at South Shields Daily Photo. Help promote the rights of photographers!
There used to be a ramshackle garage with petrol pumps directly opposite where I would fill up my motor bike in the 1960s. Don't suppose it has survived to this day though.
ReplyDeleteSeveral of my ancestors lived in MARY STREET which used to be an unmade street (unadopted?) that ran down the side of the Sunday School. Taunton Sunday School used to meet up with Waterloo Methodists at the War Memorial for hymn singing on Whit Friday-half way round their Walk.
ReplyDeleteI went to Taunton Sunday school with my brothers and sister in the 60's and early 70's. My gran used to live in the detached house (now called Kays Yard). We all used to enjoy the Whit Walks
ReplyDeleteHello Shazza,
ReplyDeleteI've got a photo of Kays Yard and will post it here soon. Please check back. Perhaps you have some information that you will be able to add in a comment?
Hi Martin,
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents lived at'Kays Yard' from roughly 1930 to 1975(ish, when my gran died). There used to be a milkman who lived further up the road on the opposite side, all the people round there used to go to the sunday school. When the wether was nice we used to go into the stream at Palmers Hill (just further down from where the garage used to be), we also used to climb 'Camels Hump' and though it was massive, really it's just a little hillock!!!
I was just randomly searching and saw the Taunton Sunday School photo. I used to go there as a child. I lived at 153 Newmarket Road (The house that sticks into the Road) and My grand mother lived at tha back..She owned both properties.I remember the Garage opposite, and the Whit Walks in the early 60's
ReplyDeletemy nan used to live on downing street and she used to take me to sunday school which i was not very keen on because when you walked through the chuch doors all you could smell was fusty wood and it was dark and dingy, but i did like doing the whit walks, and the milkman up the road was called frank and there was also a rag and bone man that used to come round and he would give you a balloon and my nan would get a donkey stone off him in exchange for some rags.
ReplyDeleteThe milkman could have been Frank Whitehead.
