B & Q at the Snipe

The entrance to the B & Q store on the Snipe retail park between Ashton and Audenshaw. This was one of the first of B & Q's larger "Warehouse" stores and replaced the earlier B & Q store nearby, which is now Staples. In the distance, behind the Give Way sign, you can just see the recently-closed MFI store - another victim of the "downturn".

The Snipe retail park was built on the site of Ashton Moss Colliery (the "Snipe Pit"). The colliery was opened in 1875 and its second shaft, sunk in 1882, at 2,850 feet was the deepest in the world at that time. The Snipe retail park takes its name from the nearby Snipe Inn on Manchester Road.

  2. 31 years ago, I photographed part of the spoil heap from Ashton Moss Colliery, with the Crowthorn Junction to Denton Junction railway line running past. My number one resolution for 2009 is to finally get my web site of Ashton's railways on line which will include this photo. I believe the entire area surrounding the line (Slate Lane, Hanover Street etc) has since been redeveloped.

  3. My Great Grandfather worked at the Snipe Colliery first as a miner and then as a coal cutting machinery demonstrator!!!!
This photo just shows how the approaches to most towns in the UK all look alike now all the same stores etc etc!!

I hope you don't mind me taking the easy route by copying and pasting this comment, it is by far the easiest method of getting my message to so many CDP photobloggers.
I am not sure that I can sustain South Shields Daily Photo much longer, it is so difficult to keep finding new material on a daily basis,
and after more than two years inspiration and motivation are becoming harder to find, so I may become less daily from time to time.
I hope you can find new hope and inspiration, and that a new start in 2009 brings everything that you desire.
The CDP photoblogging community has grown massively over the past year and I'd like to thank those who have visited South Shields Daily Photo, especially those who have been kind enough to leave a comment or two.
    Best wishes for 2008
