St John's Hurst

The church of St John the Evangelist is on Kings Road, not far from Hurst Cross. Built in 1849, the church is at an angle to the road so that it lies in a traditional west-east alignment. The steeple is a landmark that can be seen from miles around. The church has a thriving community centre close by.

It is a difficult church to photograph as it is set back from the road in a churchyard full of mature trees!

See Google Aerial View of this location.

  1. I think it's lovely, both the church and the trees around it. Especially with the autumn colors. Beautiful shot!

  2. yes thats the one where I pledged my troth , a beautiful march day back in 1956. there were graves there then. very old falling down grave stones , but i think they were removed not sure if the bodies were dug up or just lawns laid over them ,,

  3. A stunning photograph!
    Love them colours

  4. I was christened here on 22nd May 1955!!!!

  5. Have to agree with Ashtonian, fabulous photograph Martin...and that patch of blue sky was there again for you!

  6. This is a most beautiful autumn scene. My favourite time to photograph, these colours are why.

  7. This was the church where I was baptised, and where I later spent several years as organist before heading off to university. Sad to say that the last time I played the organ there was for mum's funeral.

  8. And, less than a month after posting my previous comment, I was back there, playing the organ for dad's funeral.

  9. I was married there December 1970.
    Son christened there 1973.
    In laws married there 1943.
    Husband christened there 1947

  10. I lived in Hurst and went to St. Johns every Sunday for Sunday School and so on. My best memories are of Potato Pie Suppers and the Barn Dance. It really looks better tahn I remember.
