Sky Watch: Just Before Dawn

This is the view looking eastwards towards the Pennine moorland just before dawn on a winter's morning. I didn't have to wake up early to see this - dawn comes late in the winter and it was around 8.00 am.

The photo is completely untouched and is exactly as it came from the camera (except being reduced in size). The brilliant colours were quite startling to see but had faded into pastel shades only a few minutes later.

The hills are seen across Mossley and Micklehurst, in the Tame Valley, 4 miles from Ashton under Lyne. The hills can be seen from Ashton, but not as dramatically!

Sky Watch is the regular Friday feature on this photo blog. It links with websites all over the world with the general theme each week of looking upwards. Please take the opportunity to visit some of these other sites. I hope some new visitors have found their way here today, watching the skies!

  1. Magnificent photo, the colors are amazing. I added your great blog to my followers list so I can return often to see more of your work.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. That's amazing considering it's untouched, and to your credit, it has that natural untouched look to it. Sometimes I can smell out the doctored ones. Although there are a couple blogs I follow who talk about taking their photos into the "digital darkroom" and what they come up with are refined photos aren't the "one button" enhancements ... Well done, and what a sunset!

  5. What stunning colours - glad you seized the moment before they faded. And do I detect a glimmer of snow off to the right? (enviously, from snow-less Edinburgh!)

  6. I often crop images a little and occasionally tinker with things like brightness or contrast but, as I said, this was completely unmodified! Anything I might have done would have taken away rather than add to it!

I have to say that, dramatic as the photo might look, it is as nothing to the drama of seeing the real thing that morning. (Sorry - not a sunset, Robert!)

Lindab - I think you are seeing a glimmer of factory roof! This photo was taken a few days before our modest snow arrived, but I kept it for today's Sky fans!

  8. I always say who needs photoshop. One of the most amazing UK skies I have seen for a while.

  9. I agree Babooshka. We don't often see such dramatic colours. I saw some superb skies when I was in Ireland, like this one seen across the River Shannon.
