This late wintry scene shows junction of the A635 Manchester Road with Stamford Road in Bottom Mossley. The unusual thing about this photo is that there is no traffic in sight! This is normally a very busy junction with Stamford Road being the link from Top Mossley, joining the two parts of the town.
At times there are long queues of traffic tailing back from this junction. Traffic lights are going to be installed here before long.
Behind the pedestrian crossing, the steep and narrow Mill Street is a popular short cut towards Micklehurst.
On the left of the photo you can just see the corner of Mossley's railway station building.

Hard to believe this is a congested spot at times; there doesn't look to be enough room to get congested...but that must be what the problem is - not enough room. Do you think a stoplight will help?

Did there used to be a cinema to the right and behind the photographer or somewhere in the immediate vicinity? I never visited Mossley very often but have a memory of going to a cinema nearby to see the cartoon film 'Jungle Book' in the early 1970s.
ReplyDeleteThere was indeed a cinema- on the right of Martin's photo. You went into a rather dark space and it was at the end. Was it The Empire? I saw 'Village of the Damned' there in the early 60s which was scary enough but when a train went by, your seats shook under you so adding to the creepy atmosphere. The cinema also had a very unique smell, a combination of fag smoke and very strong disinfectant. delightful!! :)

ReplyDeleteI can imagine this being a traffic jam at certain commute times, but this is a much better way to see it. Echoes of another era.
