The Cambridge

The Cambridge public house is situated on Cambridge Street in Ashton's West End. It opened in 1853 as a beer house and was only granted a full licence in 1890. The terraced houses behind and opposite the pub have been demolished and replaced with modern housing, although the block of houses further along the street has been retained and refurbished. The towers of the two remaining Ryecroft mills can be seen to the left.

  1. Every time that I go to watch Sunderland play I stop at a pub called the Cambridge for a pint!

Great work on your blog today and a very appropriate picture.

I've just racked up two years at South Shields Daily Photo and I hope to be passing here in two years time to compliment you again! Keep up the good work!
Thanks to everyone who has passed by and left a comment or some encouragement, it makes it all worthwhile.

I was born in this pub which my parents ran until the death of my father, Jack Lord in 1965. I have very fond memories of my time there and I remember the terraced houses that were attached to the pub.
I returned there in 2007 and it was pretty much as I remembered it except that the bar area had been made larger by incorporating what was the living area into it. it was closing down for refurbishment later that month, but I would love to know if it has been opened again and how it looks now!

  4. I’d love pictures of the terraced houses that used to be across from the pub.
